Alex Levine's Special Adaptations: Residency + Concerts

Special Adaptations aims to construct a platform for musical collaboration and dialogue that engages with the distinct and inspiring musical communities that the Brooklyn-based Alex Levine Trio has encountered during its travels. This project builds upon the structures and musical approaches utilized in the Alex Levine Trio, allowing for the development of a musical language that incorporates the unique voices of the musicians joining the trio. The aim is to maintain the flexibility of a core working group of musicians while invigorating and broadening the sonic possibilities available in a novel environment.

Ganglion Trio - Emerging Artist Series

The trio version of my quartet, Ganglion:

Jessica Ackerley - guitar

Florian Herzog - bass

Stephen Boegehold - drums, compositions

Named after the ganglion cyst in bandleader Stephen Boegehold’s left wrist, Ganglion’s music observes and confronts limits of the self, physical and otherwise, with curiosity and wonder. Inspired by anatomical ganglia as well as larger natural and psychological phenomena, the band seeks to create and connect compositional material with a strong reliance on improvisation.

Friday Night Live: Songs & Stories My Mother Taught Me

“Songs and Stories My Mother Taught Me” is a curated event by Patricia Wheeler (The Moth StorySLAM Ann Arbor and Detroit, Moth Radio Hour) and Sonya Belaya. The concert will pair live story-telling by Detroit-based storytellers (Patricia Wheeler, Satori Shakoor, Dameon Wilburn and Shannon Cason) with an indie-chamber song cycle entitled “Songs My Mother Taught Me”, composed by Sonya Belaya. The song cycle is written for voice, piano, cello, violin, percussion, drums, bass, trumpet and french horn. The music combines elements of through-composed and improvised music that tell the personal story of Sonya’s mother’s disappearance three years ago. Touching on themes of loss, tragedy, and grief, the song cycle is a vulnerable exploration for healing and self-understanding.

Sonya Belaya - piano, vocals, compositions

Zosha Warpeha - violin

Wesley Hornpetrie - cello

Davy Lazar - trumpet

Kalia Vandever - trombone

Nick Dunston - bass
